In the book the Uglies, Tally is struggling with man vs society. Tally was going to the hospital to become a pretty when the special circumstances worker comes in. Tally has to go talk to a lady named Dr. Cable. Dr. Cable told Tally that her something went wrong with operation. Tally thought is was because she sneaked into pretty town but Dr. Cable said it was about Tally's new friend Shay wanting to run away to the rusties. Tally promised Shay she wont tell anyone about her running away, but the special circumstances found out. Dr. Cable who is apart of special circumstances was asking all these questions about Shay running away and Tally could not answer them because of her promise to Shay. Dr. Cable told her that she had choice either help special circumstances and become pretty or not help special circumstances and stay ugly. Tally did not know what to do. 

Tally did not want to break a promise with Shay but she also didn't want to stay ugly forever. She then went back to dorm confused and disappointed. Tally would cry and cry and didn't know what to do. Tally's parents, Ellie and Sol, came to talk to Tally at lunch. The parents told Tally that she should help find Shay and answer the questions special circumstances asked. Tally then thought long and Tally decided to take a stroll on her hover board. While riding her hover board Peris came. Them two talked about what Tally should do.
