Discussion (Mattie, Brooke, Molly, Ellie)

                                                        Discussions

Today the questions that the Discussion directer shared were about how the characters in the book the Uglies felt. One question that she stated was how did Tally feel about David? We said happy that David likes her. Other questions were about how Perris felt about Tally being in the smoke. We answered by saying he was probably felt scared for her and wanted her to find him. Another question was about how Shay felt. We thought she felt like she was  jealous because Tally just walked in and stole David from her.

Conversation with Tally

Hi Tally its Sydney. I was just wondering why you can't just be happy with who you are. I know they make being a pretty sound awesome but it's not. I agree with Shay I would want to stay an Ugly. Don't let the name Uglies persuade you to be a Pretty. The pretties call you ugly even though you're not. Keep that in mind.
I was also thinking, are you and Shay going to stay best friends? Because it seems like you aren't. Shay wants to stay Ugly and you want to turn a Pretty. So you are going to get separated unless Shay is found in Smoke and is forced to be a Pretty. You may not even see Shay again because she ran away with David. Hope you stay friends!
I know you are very wild. Is this going to cause you to get in trouble by Dr.Cable? She seems very suspicious and scary. I don't think you want to know Dr.Cable's consequences. I suggest you stay on the uglyville side and do what Dr.Cable says. You can still ride your hoverboard but I just want you to stay safe and try not to get in trouble.

5 Discussion Director questions (Ray Ray, Shannon, Reese, Sydney)

Question 2:How do you feel about David?
Response 2: He is a mysterious jerk.
answer 2 I choose:I think he is mysterious

Question 3: Do you think they will find  a cure?
Response 3: No
answer 1 I choose Yes

Question 4: How do you think the book will end
Response 4: Cliff hanger
answer 1 I choose cliff hanger

Question 5: How do you feel about the out come
Response 5: Shocked and sad
answer 1 I choose Shocked

Discussion Summary 3 (Victoria G.)

We discussed that Tally is being kinda mean right now. David is a super nice guy and is always there for Tally. Shay shouldn't have gotten the surgery. David and Tally are a very cute couple and are going to save everyone expect Shay because she's pretty. Shay is only mad at Tally because Tally stole Davis. Peris deserves to stay alone.

Uglies what would I say to Tally (Molly)

At this point in the book Tally and David ran away to try to find everyone that got taken away by the Special Circumstances. Tally and David are mostly want to find where David's mom and dad are. The two of them checked David's house but his parents weren't there. So Tally told him that they should go to the Uglies to find his parents. David was unsure about going because he grew up in the Smokes, but he decided to try to find his parents with Tally.

In the Uglies, I would tell Tally that she is being very risky to take her and David both to the Special Circumstances. They both could get caught and could get into serious trouble. Tally of course has a trick to get both of them in Special Circumstances without getting caught. They both need to find away to jump down from the building. Tally decides to do what she did in the beginning of the book, jump off with by bungee jumping.

I would also ask Tally about the relationship between her and David. At first I thought Tally and Peris were going to date until Tally left to find Shay. When Tally made it to the Smokes I thought Shay and David liked each other and they were going to date. Then David started crushing on Tally and Shay was getting jealous. Tally and David kissed and ran away together. I would like to know if they are dating.

Conversations with Tally

Image result for Talk           If I had the chance to talk to Tally I would probably tell her that she needs to turn in Shay to the government. I would tell her to turn in Shay because Tally is wasting her time helping Shay when all of her focus should be on becoming a Pretty and finding her best friend Perris.
Add caption
Tally needs to reunite with her friend Perris. Shay shouldn't be trusted  because Shay is keeping her from liking David and is wasting Tally's time to reunite with Perris. Also, if the government finds out that Tally was helping Shay stay hidden then she could get in trouble and not get to turn pretty and find her best friend Perris in Pretty Town.
The second thing I would tell Tally is that she needs to do is tell David to tell Shay that he likes Tally and not Shay. The reason why she needs to tell David this is because David likes Tally. It would just be so much easier if David told Shay that he likes Tally and not her.

what would you say? (Mattie. M)

In the book uglies, they main character is Tally. If i saw Tally right now and I could say anything to her I would say that she needs to slow down. I would tell her that she needs to turn in Shay and also tell the truth to everyone. She is lying to a lot of people and that could ruin her friendships with everyone. Tally also needs to tell the truth to Shay about David. Tally has been going behind Shay's back and because of that there friendship could ruin.
Tally also needs to stop changing her mind every 2 seconds. First she wants to become pretty then, she doesn't then, she wants to be with Peris now, she wants to be with David and it could go on and on. I think Tally needs to go back to her original plan. If she doesn't turn Shay in that could jeopardize anyone else's plan to become pretty. Tally wants to stay in the smoke but she is getting in a lot of trouble so everyone else doesn't want her to stay.
Right now in the book Tally is sitting in a cave with David because the Special Circumstances are looking for her. She wouldn't have to be hiding if she wasn't lying. I think that sooner or later they're going to find Tally and David and she will get in even more trouble than she already is. She also needs to tell the truth to the Special Circumstances because now David is getting involved and will end up getting in trouble with Tally. For David's safety Tally needs to own up to her actions and confess to the Special Circumstances about what she has done.

A conversation with Tally (Emmy T.)

In the book Uglies, Tally is the man character. If I saw Tally right now and I was able to have a conversation with her, I would say that she needs to slow down and start telling everyone the truth. She is living in a world where all she is doing is lying to everyone. Tally needs to man up and stop lying and running from your problems. At the moment in the book Tally is hiding from Special Circumstances because she does not want to turn pretty anymore.
Special circumstances has just invaded the Smoke. Tally was supposed to tell them to come, but she decided she loved the Smoke and being ugly. Well she threw the pendant into a fire and that activated it. Special circumstances showed up in the morning and that's when Tally got caught. Tally decided to steal a hoverboard and run. I agree that Tally should've ran, but she needs to tell David or Shay that she was the one who accidentally did this.
Tally is now sitting in a cave with David. She needs to own up to what she did and tell David how sorry she is. She needs to do that, so she can then figure out what to do next. She needs to talk to special circumstances and try to figure out what to do. She needs to go back to the smoke. Tally just needs to stop running and lying.

Talking to Tally (Alex)

Tally, why did it take you so long to discard the pendent. Why didn't you throw it away in the river. What finally made you realize you wanted to stay in the smoke. Was it Shay or David? You took forever to throw away the pendent. The pendent is the main reason the invasion happened.

I just want to know if you stayed in the smoke because of Shay or David. Do you think that you and David could really find everyone. If you do, what do you think Shay will say? I think Shay will tell David what happened and that you are the reason everything is happening the way it is. I also think that Say will tell everyone else in the smoke what really happened.

I would be so mad at you if I found out you betrayed the entire smoke. Why didn't you just throw away the pendent faster? If you wanted to be pretty so bad, why do you want to be ugly forever now. Was it because of the truth, but what will you do with Peris. Just one last thing. How long are you going to wait to tell David about the pendent and the invasion.

Talking To Tally (Tenille)

One thing I would say to Tally is,"You should go for David and ditch Peris." I would say this because it sounds like Tally really likes him. Also, the only thing holding Tally back from not wanting to become a Pretty at all is that Peris is a Pretty. David excepts Tally for who she is but Peris doesn't want to talk to her until she is Pretty. David treats Tally really good. Peris will only except Tally is she is Pretty.

I would also say to Tally that she should tell David the truth now. Tally told herself she has to tell him some time so why not get it over with now? The longer she waits the stringer her relationship with David will grow. Then once she tells him he will be crushed. Tally just needs to tell David now so they can both just get it over with.

Another thing I would say to Tally is that she should tell Dr.Cable the truth. She has already betrayed her friends and she is pretty sure that she doesn't want to become pretty, so just tell her. Tally should just say that she doesn't want to work for her anymore and that she wants to help the Smokeys. Then when she tells her friends she betrayed them, she can say that she was really on there side though and doesn't want to help Dr. Cable. She should just tell Dr. Cable the truth and that she doesn't want to be pretty anymore.

(Victoria G.) What I would say to Tally

At this point in the story whether Tally tells David what she did or not could affect the rest of the story. I would also ask her why she hasn't told David. Even though I already know the answer. I would say that she should tell David. He has the right to know let Special Circumstances identify the Smoke.
I would ask her this because the longer she hasn't told him the longer she will be lying. I also would ask why she didn't tell Croy. He was trying to convince Shay that she didn't do anything. If she would've just said that she was the reason and explain why maybe it won't be as bad as when she tells David. Those are the two main questions I would ask.
I would ask one more question. How long until you tell David? As I have said before the longer she waits the more she has known who did it and hasn't told him. If she told them what had happen right when she made it to the Smoke she wouldn't be in this situation right now. She would also wouldn't have the guilty feeling she has now. If I had a talk with Tally this three questions is what I would ask.

Thing I would say to my Character(Reese H)

One thing I would say to Tally is stop taking such dangerous risks. She likes to take a lot of risks which fine, except for when they are really dangerous. She is always going on adventures and taking risk that could get her killed. Some time in the future she is gonna take a risk and it's gonna get her hurt. That is just one thing I would say to Tally.
Another thing I would say to Tally is being pretty isn't everything. I know that she doesn't care about being pretty as much as she did in the beginning, but I think there is still apart of her that wants to be pretty. She is starting to realize now the truth about pretties, and she is starting to except her Ugliness. However, I think she is always gonna have a part of her that wants to be pretty. That is another thing I would say to Tally
I've told you the things that I would say to Tally. Now I wanna know, what would you say to her? Would you tell her the same thing as I did? Or would you go in a completely different direction? Let me know.

What I would say to Tally (Shannon H.)

Tally what are you thinking you don't want to betray your friends yeah things aren't the best but you still have to fight through. The government Dr.Cable can't find you stay safe. I know you aren't that type but if you ever want to be pretty that you do need to maybe become a volunteer to that one place by the smokes. I would say this because she is betraying her friends trust and you can't just say sorry and have it all be okay. You have to make up your mind but make sure it's the one you want to life with, no take backs.

Talking with Tally (Ray Ray)

If i could talk to tally then I would tell her to go in for it go in to David. Its obvious he likes you and obvious you like him. You go girl.    I would tell tally this because she gets to scared or to venous when she is by David but she is a advice follower so it shouldn't be that hard. Tally kinda listens to her friends or people with power so it would be very easy to tell her to go out and be with David.

Research on Scott Westerfeild

                                   All about Scott Westerfeild

Image result for Uglies pictures              My book is the Uglies. The Uglies is written by a man named Scott Westerfeld. In the past Scott Westerfeld has written many different books some of which are the Pretties, Specials, Extras, After Worlds, Leviathan, and Peeps. I think Scott Westerfeld wrote this book for lots of reasons. He most likely wrote this book to entertain all ages about different lands and to entertain people while they're reading. He also could've written this book to start a series. If you didn't already know the Uglies is a part of a series. Before he wrote this book he most likely meant for it to become a series. Scott Westerfeld also could've written this book becuase he wanted people to enjoy reading. I'm not a big reader but I like this book

He is a very talented writer. I fell in love with this book within the first five pages. He makes the book very detailed and it draws the reader in fairly quickly. I would definitely recommend this book for people who have read The Giver, Divergent, and just reader who like Sci-Fi books in general. I love this book and I'm more then certain that you will too.

I also think he wrote this book because it was something different than any other author has wrote and he put a different spin on everyday normal life. Scott is a great writer and I hope he continues to wright

Information about Scott Westerfeld (Alex G.)

The Uglies author is Scott Westerfeld. He has won many awards like the Aurealis Award, Goodreads Choice and many more. He has made more than 20 books. He has made many squeals to his books. Scott Westerfeld actually got his idea of Uglies form John Christopher book the Tripods. He has written Uglies, Pretties, Specials, and Extras. He has also written Leviathan, Afterworlds, Goliath, Behemoth, and Peeps. Along with those many more.

I think Scott Westerfeld wrote this book because he had a sister-in-law that was suppose to make sure that everything on actors was perfect. She had to make sure the skin was flaws. Her job was to have all the actors be perfect. He states," So I was watching the way that the people on the screen who kids idolize and want to be, are actually- not only are the chosen for being incredibly beautiful, but then they have these visual effects guys go through and fix every imperfection they have." That says the the kids that watch T.V or movies want to be flawless and have to mistake. Scott Westerfeld thought that the movies that made everything perfect about the actors was like plastic surgery. He said," There was a part of the Tripods series, where when you turn 16 you get capped... I pretty much ripped that off from John Christopher in the Uglies."

(Victoria G.) Scott Westerfeld

Scott Westerfeld is the author of Uglies and many other books. Scott has wrote 18 novels. 13 are for young adults. He was born in Texas and splits his time between New York City and Sydney, Australia. He's best known for four sets of young adult books. Those book are the Uglies series, Leviathan trilogy, Midnighters, and The New York Trilogy. The Uglies are one of his most popular series.
Scott has wrote 7 series. One of them being the Uglies. Scott got his inspiration for writing the Uglies from the "Tripods series where when you turn sixteen you get capped  -- you get this plate put in you head, which is supposedly a sign that you're a man or adult, and of course it turns out to be a terrible thing". Scott also says that he he "pretty much ripped that off from John Christopher in the Uglies.  I think that he wrote this book to imagine what a future world could be like. What could happen if we keep focauseing on beauty instead of personality.  That is why I think Scott Westerfeld wrote the Uglies.

The Author (Tenille)

The author of my book is Scott Westerfeld. He has written many other books besides the Uglies. The other books he wrote in this series are Pretties, Specials, and Extras. He has also written books such as The Risen Empire, The Killing Of Worlds, Peeps, The Last Days, and So Yesterday. He has also written a graphic novel series called Shay's Story. Plus he has written the Leviathan trilogy. The Leviathan trilogy consists of Leviathan, Behemoth, Goliath, and The Manual of Aeronautics. He also wrote books such as Afterworlds, Evolution's Darling, Zeros, Bogus To Bubbly, Fine Prey, Polymorph, Love is Hell, and Stupid Perfect World.

In Scott Westerfeld's books he likes the question authority. For example in the Uglies Tally and Shay going to the Smoke is against society. He likes to question the way things are and why they are that way. He also writes a lot about the coming of age. That turning point in teens or kids life. For example when you have to make a choice that could change your life or you have to finally grow up. Two of Scott Westerfeld's quotes that really relate to the book Uglies are, " Everyone in the world is programmed by the place they were born, hemmed in by their beliefs, but you had to at least try to grow your own brain." The other quote is, "What you do, the way you think, makes your beautiful." In the society of the Uglies everyone is programmed to think that everyone being physically pretty is the only way for things to be equal but Shay and Tally grow minds of their own and think about it differently.

About the Author (Emmy T.)

Scott Westerfeld was born on May 5, 1963 in Dallas, Texas. He is currently 53 years old and is living in Sydney, Australia and New York City, New York. He is a very successful author who has written many book series. One of his most successful book series is The Uglies series. There are 4 books in that series which are Uglies, Pretties, Specials and Extras. They are all written between 2005-2007. He has also written a book called Afterworlds which was published in 2014. The book is about a girl in the city with some paranormal activity involved.

I think Scott Westerfeld wrote this book because he seems to write a lot about the future. Also because Zeros (one of his book series) involves super powers. Since superpowers aren't in this century, it must take place in the future. This book is very mature and is good for both adults and teens. I think he wrote this book for that age group because his other books seem to be mature too.

(SydneyH) Author of the Uglies

The author of the Uglies is Scott Westerfeld. Scott lives in New York City and Sydney, Australia. He has been a factory worker, substitute teacher, textbook editor, software designer, and ghost writer. He has a wife named Justine Larbalestier and no kids. For school he went to Texas Vassar Philosophy BA in 1985. He has written the Uglies, Pretties, Specials, and Extras as a series. Scott likes to write science fiction adult books.

Scott wrote the Uglies because he wanted to base the people that are normal as the Uglies. And the Pretties are the people who had plastic surgery and have a lot of makeup on. Scott got an award for science fiction books so he's made more science fiction books. He loves making books for young adults.

About the Author(Reese H.)

Scott Westerfeld was born on May 5, 1963 in Dallas, Texas. He is a famous author who has written a lot of different books like the one we are reading called Uglies. Some other book that he has written include Afterworlds, Peeps, So Yesterday, and many others. One interesting fact that I found was the he is a vegetarian. He also has studied some different languages like Japanese, Spanish, and Latin.
Uglies is probably one of his most famous books. It was originally published on February 8, 2005. It is the first book in the series and it has 3 other books which are Pretties, Specials, and Extras. I think he wrote this series to entertain us with a book that is set in future because when books are set in the future, that means that they could possibly happen later on in life. I think he also wrote it to teach us the being pretty isn't everything.

Simon Pulse (Ray Ray)

Scott Westerfeld is the creative man who wrote the book Uglies. There are actually three more books in the series. The books in order go Uglies (the book this blog is all about), Pretties(the next book I hope I get to read), Specials (another one I want to read), Extras (ok lets be real I want to read them all). He seems to write in series. He has wrote a lot of books so those are the only ones I will name all tho here is a link to all of his books or most Link. I think Scott wrote this book (based on what I have read) because he wants you to know that every one is pretty in their own way and because you should put others before you. I think he is showing you that you are pretty all on your own with shay and not be selfish with Tally. Tally just wants her surgery so she rats on shay. Shay doesn't want her surgery because she think she is pretty all on her own. Thanks for reading. Update you later.

Problems in the book- Uglies

           Conflict/ Man vs. Society

My conflict is man vs. society. My conflict is this because Tally is an ugly and the society is keeping her away from being a pretty. To make matters even worse Tally's best friend Perris has already turned into a pretty. Tally is struggling big time because she misses her best friend and wants to be a pretty. I know she is struggling because Tally broke the society rules and jumped over a bridge just to get to see Perris. When Peris found out he was upset because if the society found out that Tally broke the rules they might forbid her to ever become a pretty even when the age isn't a problem.

Another conflict is with Tally and Shay. Tally wants to be a pretty very badly as said before. Tally however lives in a town with many different uglies who all have her same dream of becoming a pretty when they turn sixteen years old. Tally knows someone who doesn't want to become a pretty. The person who doesn't want to become pretty is Shay. Shay and Tally want different things this resolves in a conflict.
